Summery: In the first part of this novel, actors introduce main characters including Karana lives with her brother Ramo in an island faraway and she is the main character . The next character is Aleuts who is Captain of the ship. They introduce many other characters including Karana's father. Karana lives in Ghalas-at. People of Ghalas-at supply their food by fishing and farming. One day a red ship arrived into island. Then Aleuts compeled natives for hunting sea otters in return at other things. Aleuts tried to leave island without paying anything. When Karana's father decided to stand against Aleuts, they began to destroy island by leaving the island and paying only a little for the sea otters. In the second part of the story the new Chief Kimki leaves the island for helps and brings back the people to island. Although Karana urges the captain to wait for her brother Ramo to return, the ship must leave before an approaching storm makes it impossible to leave. Karana decides to swim into the beach and Karana with her brother stay alone for a while in the island because they hope ship return. Then Ramo is killed by many dogs that fight with Aleuts. Karana must continue her life like Primitives. She does not feel lonely with dolphins. She builds home and makes a life for herself. She decides to hunt the octopus. In the third part, after a long time, Karana and the young Aleut woman meet and befriend each other. Karana explain herself. One day, Karana sees a ship which leaves. Finally, after two years, when ship of Aleuts comes back, so she goes to meet the ship and they have a dress made for her but she does not like the dress. Finaly The ship takes Karana and her friend to the Santa Barbara.
